About Guns Akimbo

Guns Akimbo is a 2019 hyperkinetic action-comedy that throws its mild-mannered protagonist, Miles (Daniel Radcliffe), into the most extreme situation imaginable. After trolling a dark web live-streamed death match called 'Skizm,' Miles wakes up to find guns literally bolted to his hands. He is forced by the game's psychotic organizer, Riktor (Ned Dennehy), to become its newest contestant, with the stakes raised impossibly high: his ex-girlfriend Nova (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) has been kidnapped, and her survival depends on Miles winning a bloody battle against the game's reigning, nihilistic champion, Nix (Samara Weaving).

Director Jason Lei Howden delivers a visually frenetic and stylistically over-the-top experience, painting a neon-drenched, video game-inspired world of urban chaos. The film's greatest strength is Daniel Radcliffe's committed and physically demanding performance, perfectly capturing Miles's transformation from a cynical keyboard warrior to a desperate, improvised fighter. Samara Weaving is equally magnetic as the unhinged Nix, creating a formidable and darkly funny antagonist.

While the plot is intentionally simple—a race against time across a city turned arena—the execution is wildly inventive. The action is chaotic, brutal, and often darkly humorous, with the 'guns akimbo' premise used for creative and absurd fight choreography. The film critiques online toxicity and spectacle culture with a sledgehammer, not a scalpel. Viewers should watch Guns Akimbo for its relentless energy, standout performances, and its unique, video game-esque aesthetic. It's a violent, funny, and visually distinctive ride that doesn't take itself too seriously, perfect for fans of high-concept action and pitch-black comedy.
